Tell us the inspiration behind the shoot.
Kim- I believe connection and experience matter more than the ‘stuff’ at a wedding, so I’ve always gravitated toward elopements.
With this shoot, I knew I wanted a very relaxed, casual vibe. It’s never really my thing to overstyle anything or go for trends, so we kept it simple! I asked Edward and Mathew to wear things they already own and dress how they felt best. (I personally love both of their senses of style.)
I wanted to showcase beautiful, accessible elopement locations in Jasper, and get my creative brain going again. This shoot was timed a few months after having a baby, so really, a lot of the motivation behind it for me was just getting some time to create for the sake of creating.
Colleen- Elopements (or engagements) should be personal and reflect the couple. I loved the adventurous and playful nature of the setting and the couple.
I have been dreaming of making a floral meadow (ground pieces) for Jasper Lake for a while. Every time I drove by there, I imagined flowers in the shallow water surrounded by mountains. It’s such a cool spot and so accessible.
Why was creating this shoot important to the team?
Kim- It’s always my goal to help couples see new possibilities for what their wedding experience can be like and that there are no rules at the end of the day. I hoped to inspire couples to consider more out-of-the-ordinary locations and see that things can be simple – just you, your partner, some flowers, and nature – and still magical.
Colleen- To showcase creative, out of the ordinary florals for couples. To continue a working relationship together – I am grateful to work with Kim. I love her work and energy. There is an easiness between us and her photos are pure magic every time. She just gets it.
What are the key styling elements of the styled inspiration, and who brought them to life?
Kim- It’s also really important to me that if I’m taking photos of a couple, that they look and feel like themselves – it’s not a performance. I want to capture genuine connection and the little things that make their relationship their own. I really left the couple’s styling up to them, so on my end, it was more about feel and less about styling!
Colleen- Florals and multiple settings from one parking lot. Out-of-the-ordinary floral pieces to reflect personal style (couple) and skill/creative design (floral designer).
Words by the couple Edward & Mathew
What is your favorite memory together?
It’s so hard to pick when you have almost nine years of memories. But probably waking up on the weekends when we can just be in bed together with nothing to do and our cats for company.
What has been the biggest challenge you’ve had to overcome together?
Probably four-plus years of long periods of long-distance. It’s hard to handle but so worth it.
What would you say if you could give your younger selves a pep talk for the future?
Love is always worth it. Make sure you enjoy the ride!
Tell us your favorite things about one another.
M- Hard to choose when he’s such an amazing person, but probably how honest he is. I can always count on him to tell the truth and to be upfront about how he’s feeling and what he thinks.
E- I like it when he eats tasty food and can’t help but dance.
